Who are “these people” and do I really need them?

I’ve been in the Real Estate business for over 25 years and I have friends that ask, “Why do I need a realtor in today’s technology world?” The answer is simple… electronic information will provide you with many facts, photos,  contacts, and even sample contracts so that you are familiar with the process, but to truly understand what is happening in today’s market in the US or abroad, there is no substitute for the experience that Realtors® bring to the table.

Whether you are buying or selling as a result of a corporate move or a matter of choice, Realtors® play an important role in the real estate process. I know, this sounds like a commercial for the National Association for Realtors, but there is a reason why Realtors® exist.

  • Only real estate licensees who are members of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® are properly called REALTORS®. 
  • REALTORS® are committed to treat all parties to a transaction honestly. 
  • They subscribe to a strict code of ethics and are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the process of buying and selling real estate.

My husband and I have purchased several homes over the past 30 years, but it was the purchase of our second home that convinced us that we needed assistance. We started as many people do, looking around on our own and back then (1984) we didn’t have the benefit of the internet. We packed a lunch, placed our daughter in the car seat and headed out for a day of searching for a new home.  Like most, we called every name on the yard sign thinking that each agent had a different list of properties available in our chosen location. We quickly found out that they all work from the same data base and would gladly sell their own listing or one of their brokers if it fit the criteria.  Again, like many others, we called on one that we liked and got an agent on call. We didn’t know it at the time, but she was one of the most experienced agents in her office. She encouraged us to come into her office to review all properties available in our price range…and that’s what we did.

This sounds like the same old story, but what was significant was she had a check list of items to cover with us so that we were prepared for the next step. Although, we thought we were in control, it turns out she knew how to help us gather enough information to make an informed decision.  A Realtor® knows the market, has a list of suppliers that support the real estate industry and provides you with an overview of the home sale or home finding process. Her checklist gave us everything we needed to get the ball rolling and we stayed in control.

“Real estate transactions involve one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to deal with it without the help of a CPA? If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of an attorney? Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®.”

Suffice it to say, Realtors® are true professionals who provide expert knowledge and guidance in this industry. When you are surfing the web, you can find tons of information, but you could be missing an item or two that might be a significant consideration in your home sale or home purchasing process.  We bought a great home and live in it for 10 years.  Not only was our Realtor® a wonderful person, but she was responsible for luring me into the real estate business. I’ve been in some form of sales for most of my career, but her professionalism convinced me that if you adhere to the professional standards of NAR and build a business on solid principles and values you will not only be one of “these people”, you will be a well respected professional who will provide – providing real estate service for years to come. Referrals come naturally from satisfied customers who want to make the best decisions that they can when making a financial investment.
